Excerpt: To all the participants and those with passion for our country, thank you for making time to be with us today and we hope that the information shared, including our Prime Minister’s keynote address, will provide the catalyst and a roadmap for the sustainability of the resource industry in PNG.
Under the theme ‘RESOURCE INDUSTRY – MAKING IT WORK FOR PNG’ this webinar, including the previous four we presented last year, have consistently tried to establish a shared credible public platform to meaningfully discuss the sustainability of our resources sector.
"Let me close with some points so that the industry and those of you tuning in may appreciate for if there is a need for clarity and to conclude my involvement in this webinar. On record the mining and petroleum sector remains our number one economic sector in our country and that is acknowledged and that will remain so ..."
Prime Minister Marape says The government acknowledges the important contribution the mining and sector provides to the country and to the economy. Without this sector, our country would be far behind in terms of our economic performance and in terms of service delivery by the government to our people.
A discussion on the contributions of the PNGLNG Project and how its workforce has grown to include over 3,000 Papua New Guineans.
ExxonMobil PNG Managing Director, Andrew Barry says the PNG LNGs K10bn contribution since 2014 has supported the country’s economy, highlighting a number of important figures, including K1.5bn in royalty payments to landowners, as well as almost K3bn in taxation.
Nuni Kulu – PNG Business Council President/General Manager Digital, Bank South Pacific Ltd states, the middle class are the engine room of growth as they are not only active consumers but big investors as well. As a panelist in today's webinar, speaking of the "Ripple of Multiplier effects of a project such as the PNG LNG, and BSPs helping of landowners in the Edai Town project." "The growth in the middle class is in turn stimulating the national economy, with an increase in demand for financial services as SMEs and business look at expansion." There is an urgency to fire up resource projects so that members of the middle class can replicate and better the financially viable ventures such as the Edai Town project among others.
Sisa Kini- National Content Manager, ExxonMobil PNG, says Creating jobs for women is an integral part in growing the economy. Having a career that has spanned over two decades has led her to appreciate the importance of having women participate in the Mining and Petroleum industry. Presenting on 'Women's Empowerment through the PNG LNG Project" is it recognized that inequality is a major barrier to the development of women, and encourages more people to be part of the ''Women in Energy'' network.
Papua New Guinea Mining and Petroleum Seminar '4th Webinar Series Augustine Mano - Managing Director of the Mineral Resources Development Company and 3rd panelist in today's webinar speaking on the importance of sustainability when presenting "The Gas Resources and its work". "we are bringing those people up so that they can see (when the project ends) that they are part of those development’s… It has to be sustainable , all these investments that we are doing is that 25 – 30 years from now when the LNG (project) is gone, the revenue is sufficient that it becomes sustainable for their quality of life.
Luke Liria - Chief Operating Officer of the Kumul Petroleum Academy noting the importance of the Oil Sector in Papua New Guinea, and its relationship to the Kumul Petroleum Academy. Luke Liria, who dialed into today's seminar says "we need the industry players – our facility depends on the oil industry" indicating the importance in synergy and relationship between candidates intending to work in the resource sector, and the potential employers that recognize the value of having a skilled, competent and local workforce capable of employment in an international arena.
